Support Your Local Cooperative

 In Blog, Uncategorized

You know that Flying Bike Cooperative Brewery is considered a cooperative because we are wholly owned by our members, but did you know that there are over 700 other co-ops in Washington? The Great Northwest is home to almost every type of co-op, including preschools, grocery stores, healthcare, art galleries, rural electric companies and even a brewery! These co-operatively owned and run businesses are setting an example of how to support the local economy and build stronger, healthier communities.

To help spread the word about co-ops and celebrate the wonderful things they do in their community, Flying Bike is joining forces with Seattle Metropolitan Credit Union (SMCU) and a host of other co-ops for Co-opalooza, Sunday, October 16 at Seattle Center. Co-opalooza is a free, all-ages event that gives attendees a chance to see the impressive diversity of cooperatives and gives each co-op a chance to tell its story.

Participating co-ops will offer free food samples, discounted massages, coffee samples and more. The Seattle Children’s Museum will be on hand hosting a variety of free kid’s activities. There will also be live music from original local bands, Caspar Babypants, Recess Monkey, The Moondoggies and Ravenna Woods.

Co-opalooza promises to be an awesome kick off to the UN’s International Year of Cooperatives, which begins in October 2011. Make your plans now to join us and see all of the different ways co-ops can make a difference in your life.
