About Us
Meet Our Board of Directors
Flying Bike Cooperative Brewery’s Board of Directors consists of nine members:
![]() |
President – Tim Dery
Originally from Ohio, Tim’s 21st birthday was spent in Western Washington and he’s been enjoying local craft beer ever since. He describes brewing beer on his deck in West Seattle as “zen-like”, and no matter where he is right now he would probably rather be brewing. He’s working on a toast for when the brewery opens, something along the lines of “Here’s to night jobs turning into day jobs, and day jobs fading into fond memories!” Term Expires: 2014 |

Vice President/Secretary – Brian Cadwell
Brian Cadwell is a native Cascadian hophead from West Seattle. An attorney by day, he can be found seeking to formulate the perfect IPA recipe or hoisting a pint or two at Beveridge Place Pub in his free time. Term Expires: 2013 |

Vice President – Ryan Vanderpol
Ryan, a native Washingtonian and self-proclaimed beer-geek, leads a software team by day, continues his quest for all things beer by night and attempts to split his weekends between homebrewing, snowboarding, hiking, cycling and travelling. He strives to build a community of beer lovers and lead the epic adventure of building a great local-minded brewery. Term Expires: 2012 |

Treasurer – Chris Tarnstrom
Christopher Tarnstrom has been homebrewing since he was young, helped organize student brewing at Reed, and since college has hoped to help open a brewery. Part of this vision led to gaining accounting and business experience. His professional path has included Big 5 risk management and consulting, and helping small businesses and non-profits. Now, many batches and beers and the ensuing stories later, Chris is very enthused to contribute to Flying Bike. Term Expires: 2012 |

Principal – Drew Wilson
Beer has always been a big part of Drew’s life. He started collecting beer cans at age 14, with a can of Schlitz furnished by his Dad (he still has most of them). He didn’t realize how great beer could be until he arrived in Seattle in 1990. He began homebrewing in 1998 and, like many others, has dreamed about bringing great beer to the masses. Drew describes himself as a “hophead” and when not playing with beer, he spends his professional life in sales and marketing. Term Expires: 2012 |

Principal – Tim Frommer
Tim started homebrewing when he lived in San Francisco, but didn’t get serious until 2005 when he moved to “home and craft brew Nirvana” – Seattle. He brews all-grain almost exclusively and primarily English style ales, and he is constantly tinkering with his recipes. His basement is testimony to homebrewing, full of fermentors, gadgets, bottles, kegs, kettles and more. He doesn’t have a favorite commercial craft beer — too many great ones — but Bear Republic’s “Racer 5 IPA” would make any top 5 list. Like almost all homebrewers, he’s had the dream of seeing one of his beers on tap at a local pub. When he saw Jeff’s original ad for Flying Bike Cooperative Brewery, he jumped at the opportunity and here he is, a founding Board member! Term Expires: 2012 |

Principal – Michael Dieterle
A craft beer lover and avid homebrewer for nearly 20 years, Michael hails from the San Francisco Bay Area, and moved to the Seattle area for a new job back in 1998. He enjoys exploring as many different breweries and craft beer bars as possible, and visits his favorite craft beer spots or discovers new places nearly every weekend. When he’s not brewing, Michael enjoys motorcycle rides, spending time with his wife, Lynn, and perfecting his barbecue techniques. Term Expires: 2014 |

Principal – Jake Walters
Jake was introduced to brewing by his brother. Together, they would spend Saturdays brewing and hanging out. When his brother moved in 2005, there was no room for the equipment in the new place so it ended up at Jake’s house. He has since taken over the family brewing, so to speak. Jake has developed a passion for brewing great beer, and has dreamed of opening a brewery. He has many solid recipes that his family and friends love, but he continues to experiment with other recipes. Term Expires: 2014 |

Interim Principal – Mike Knoll
Mike is a Seattle native who has always enjoyed the wealth of craft brews the area is known for. Having recently discovered the joys of homebrewing, he knew Flying Bike was the perfect organization to get involved with to feed a growing addiction for brewing knowledge. His day job as a consultant in the forensic accounting industry is a necessary evil required to help pay for the growing wish list of homebrew equipment. Term Expires: 2012 |
