I’m Jeff Staples, member number 236. The thing that I’m most excited about as a member of Flying Bike is the chance to make a greater contribution to the Seattle beer community. What I love about beer drinkers in Seattle is that we’re just like everyone else in the northwest: even-keeled and laid back. That is, until we start talking about beer. Drinkers and brewers alike get animated, start waving their arms, have long conversations with strangers, and even share drinks over their common passion for beer. I think that’s what makes this community so special.
And being a part of such a special community, I want to do two things. I want to serve the people that make me love to go out and try new and exciting beers (as well as a lot of old standbys, of course) and bring more people into this thriving and generous group. Hence, my application for board membership. Whether I’m on the board or not, I plan to drink a lot of Flying Bike beer. I’ve really enjoyed talking to and drinking with to so many interesting and diverse members at the beer with the board and other events, and I plan to come to as many events as I can. I want to keep getting to know other members and keep trying new member-driven beers (can’t wait to try the FlyPA). I’m really excited to try a lot of new homebrewer recipes, and I know that a lot of homebrewers are really pushing the envelope in terms of styles and flavors. That’s why cooperative format of this brewery really appeals to me. However, being on the board, as I see it, requires not only a commitment to and love of beer, but also a commitment to and love of the people who comprise the Seattle beer community. I’m excited to use my talents to serve this community and bring people closer together around our shared passion for beer. I’m really excited to take my homebrewing to a new level with other members, but what drives my board application and my dedication to this brewery in specific is the members. I haven’t met very many, but I know enough of the Seattle beer community to know that this will be a very special group of people. Also, I want to grow this community. I know how awesome it is and how passionate people are in this beer culture, I want to open other people up to this kind of excitement over red ales, brown ales, stouts, hefs, IPAs, bitters, sours, blondes, lagers, and all other styles of beer. Given how welcoming you all are, I can’t wait to look for new opportunities to see lots of new people come alive in a new way over the beverage we know and love: beer. |
