I’m relatively new to home brewing, with less than a year under my belt, so I can still remember the feeling I had when I tasted the first beer I made.  After getting over my amazement that not only was this beverage not making me queasy, but it was actually pretty good, I realized that this hobby was something I wanted to jump into.  Since that time I’ve come to realize that you do get the occasional dud (let’s not talk about those), but every batch is a new learning experience.

When I heard that there was a brewery starting up that I could be a part of, I jumped on it.  Flying Bike could give me access to a large group of people that share my same interest.  What better way is there to learn something than to have direct access to people who have been doing it for years, if not decades?  I’m going to venture a guess that a quite a few of you who are reading this share this same sentiment.
In the near term we need to establish and execute on a realistic business plan, which will allow us to establish our place of business and open our doors to the public.  We need to figure out whatever shape and form is required to fill a market need such that we can become a profitable, self sustaining business.  This initial form may or may not be exactly what we each are envisioning, but I think our shared desire to make this co-op a success will overcome any obstacles.  We need to consider a whole host of variables: location, capacity, distribution, storage, food, target audience etc., and be willing to compromise preconceived desires.  When we open our doors, we need to make sure that Flying Bike generates enough revenue to keep those doors open.

In addition to being a successful brewery my long vision for Flying Bike is to identify an effective method for aggregating and distributing the shared knowledge of our members.  I envision a series of ‘How To’ articles and videos organized that appeal to rookies and veterans alike.  Additionally, things like hands on workshops, seminars, and an active online forum are great tools for sharing ideas.

Now let me tell you why I’m the right guy for the job.  I work in the field of Forensic Accounting where I consult with companies that have gotten themselves in financial trouble.  This requires that I identify the problems which put the company in an unfortunate position and develop solutions to help them manage and recover from the situation.  This has given me perspective on what pitfalls to avoid when creating businesses and entering into contracts.  I will bring my wealth of experience and drive to achieve success if I’m elected to the Board.  So I’m asking for your vote.   I look forward to sharing a delicious pint of Fly-PA (or whatever’s on tap) with all of you soon!.

Cheers,

Mike Knoll
